Advancements in technology are beneficial to the advancement of society in an economic and business sense. However, the long-term impacts of the technology are still unknown.

The Millenials are a new generation; the first in history to be exposed to screens and mobile devices throughout all stages of their physiologic development.

The human brain is plastic and adaptable and always changing in response to the environment. Children’s brains are particularly adaptable in development, which is now when the brain is most exposed to technology.

According to Williams (2016) increased screen time neglects the circuits in the brain that control more traditional methods for learning in the frontal lobe. These are typically used for reading, writing and concentration.

With loss of these important skills, digital dementia has arrived. This term describes how overuse of digital technology is resulting in the breakdown of cognitive abilities in a way that is traditionally seen in people who have suffered a head injury or Alzheimer’s disease.

Mobile phones exceed safety limits when touching the head or body

              Mobile phones exceed safety limits

A new study has been published which analyses data released last year by the French national radiation assessment bureau (ANFR) following the ‘Phonegate’ scandal in France.
‘Phonegate’ revealed that mobile phones tested in laboratories are not tested next to the head or body and are held between 5 and 25 millimeters away. When the same mobile phones are held on the ear or in proximity to the body (e.g.: in a pocket) as in a real-life situation, the amount of radiation absorbed by the body exceeds international safety limits.
This new study finds that some phone models can emit 11 times over the US FCC safety limit and 3 times over European/ICNIRP safety limits.
The analysis of over 450 mobile phone models was carried out by Professor Om Gandhi who stated “My analysis confirms that currently marketed cell phones could exceed US FCC limits by as high as 11 times the 2-decade old allowable U.S. limits”

Tips for reducing mobile phone radiation exposure

1. Keep your phone at a distance whenever possible; text rather than talk or use the speaker function.

‘Flying blind’ on 5G health and safety

‘Flying blind’ on 5G health and safety is the conclusion reached by Senator Richard Blumenthal recently during a U.S. Senate Commerce Hearing on the roll-out of 5G.

Addressing wireless industry representatives last month, Senator Blumenthal raised concerns about 5G’s potential health risks and asked whether they have supported research on the safety of 5G technology and potential links between radiofrequency and cancer.

The industry representatives conceded they have not supported such research, leading Senator Blumenthal to conclude that “we are flying blind here on health and safety.”

The articles highlight the potential health risks associated with using Bluetooth-enabled ear pieces which are not only available with Apple products but with Google and Samsung devices too.

Jerry Phillips, a professor of biochemistry at the University of Colorado Springs is quoted as saying “My concern for AirPods is that their placement in the ear canal exposes tissues in the head to relatively high levels of radio-frequency radiation.”

This view echoes the thoughts of about 250 EMF scientists from around the world who have signed a petition to the United Nations and the World Health Organization expressing concern about non-ionizing electromagnetic fields (EMF), which is the kind of radiation emitted by wireless devices, including Bluetooth-enabled technology. The petition calls for stricter guidelines to be imposed on this new technology following studies showing a link between EMF exposure and cancer and other serious health issues.
